European stocks rise amid anticipation of Brexit developments

European stocks rose during the morning sessions on Monday, poised to the first gain in the last 4 days, amid a broad anticipation for new developments on Brexit file, as Brexit optimism is still the main driver behind the market.

 

Stoxx Europe 600 rose by 0.2% as of 11:34 GMT, after it extended its losses for the third straight day and closed lower by 0.3% on Friday, after the release of disappointing earnings reports by major French companies.

 

During last week, the index scored a gain of 0.25%, its second weekly gain, after the emerge of positive news around the Brexit.

 

The index opened today's session higher, on the cusp of its first gain in the last 4 days, with most of the major European exchanges and sectors rising.

 

The mining sector saw the largest gains in Europe today, with a surge of more than 2.2%, as most of the sector stocks rose.

 

The British PM, Boris Johnson was forced to request a 3-month deadline extension for Brexit from Brussels, after the British parliament vote on Saturday.

 

Investors are eager for the EU's response on Johnson's "unsigned letter," should it got approve, this would extend the Brexit deadline to January 31st, and will open the door for a new general elections in the UK.

 

Although several European leaders have expressed disapproval for an extension, whilst an agreement for an orderly exit is the most likely option, considering it's the least damaging scenario for both the UK and the EU.

 

S&P 500 futures rose by 0.3%, while it closed lower by 0.4% on Friday at Wall Street, after a weak earnings reports issued by Johnson & Johnson and Boeing and weak Chinese data.

 

To the European stock markets, the Euro Stoxx 50 index rose by 0.5%, as in France the CAC 40 rose by 0.2%, and Germany's DAX climbed 0.75%, while in London the FTSE 100 gained 0.2%.
