US stock indices opened the first session of the week mostly lower, with Apple and Amazon leading the decline and as US-China trade concerns resurface, with reports that US President Donald Trump gave instruction to implement new tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, with Beijing promising a retaliation.

The tariffs will focus on internet tech products, electronics, consumer products and others.

Otherwise, earlier US data showed the Empire State Manufacturing Index receded to 19 in September from 25.6, missing estimates of 23.2.

As of 02:42 GMT, Standard and Poor's 500 shed 0.23%, or 6.81 points to 2,898.17, while Dow Jones added 0.04%, or 10.11 points to 26,164.78.

Tech-heavy NASDAQ tumbled 0.92%, or 73.42 points to 7,936.62.
