US stock indices opened mixed with a tilt lower, following an array of data from America, the world's largest economy, which showed retail sales rose for the first time in three months past expectations in July.

Now markets await the release of the Federal Reserve's minutes of the July 25-26 meeting on Wednesday as investors assess the chances of a third rate hike this year and tightening of monetary policy, underpinning the finance sector, which offset Wall Street's energy and utility losses.

AS of 05:25 GMT, Standard and Poor's 500 fell 0.01%, or 0.13 points to 2,465.71, while Dow Jones advanced 0.03%, or 6.38 points to 22,000.09.

Tech-heavy NASDAQ shed 0.02%, or 1.37 points to 6,338.86.
