US stocks soar on trade talk optimism

US stocks closed broadly higher on Tuesday, as investors became hopeful that a trade deal can be reached between the US and China, after the launch of a new round of talks today.

 

Officials from China headed by Vice Premier Liu He met with their US counterparts in Washington today to discuss removing the obstacles that hinder a trade deal in attempts to end the trade war.

 

President Trump announced via his Twitter account today that he will meet with the Chinese Vice Premier Liu He tomorrow at the White House, which raised markets hopes and expectations for a tangible progress in the talks.

 

The US Department of Labor showed today that the unemployment claims fell by 10,000 to 210,000 last week, and the consumer price index (CPI) stabilized in September.

 

In the oil market, WTI rose by 1.8% to close at $53.55 a barrel, with a season-high of $53.5 and a low of $51.3.

 

Brent rose by 1.3% to $59.10 a barrel, with a high of $59.1 and a low of $57.8.

 

Dow Jones rose by 0.6% or 150 points to close at 26,496 points, with an intraday high of 26,603 points and a low of 26,314 points.

 

Nasdaq also rose 0.6% or 47 points to close at 7,950 points, with a high of 7,982 points and a low of 7,899 points.

 

S&P 500 gained 0.6% or 18 points to close at 2,938 points, with a high of 2,948 points and a low of 2,917 points.
