Silver slips away from two-week high

Silver prices rose to a two-week high on Monday before trimming the gains as the dollar kept trading near an eight-month high against main rivals.

Silver last traded at $17.58 an ounce, up from the opening price of $17.50, with an intraday high at $17.86, and a low at $17.43.

Dollar's strength against main rivals, setting an eight-month high, forced the white metal down according to their inverse relation, with demand rising on the greenback as a safe haven amid expectations of a Fed rate hike before the year end while other central banks hold policies steady.

Dollar's gains forced silver to trim its own, with the white metal now trading near the opening price, as gold prices returned lower as well after a positive start.

The dollar index, gauging the greenback's performance versus an array of six major currencies, rose to 98.77 from the opening of 98.68, with an intraday low at 98.55, and an eight-month high at 98.85, after registering four weekly gains in a row.
