US stock indices opened the last session of the week up 1% before relinquishing the gains and reversing sharply lower, then paring the losses and trading mixed amid high volatility, after marking heavy losses earlier this weak on Fed rate hike prospects.

US wholesale inventories rose 0.4% in the final December reading, up from 0.2% in the preliminary reading, while analysts expected a 0.2% rise with no change, as wholesale sales for the same month slowed down to 1.2% from 1.9% in November, beating expectations of 0.4%.

US Senate reached a $300 billion deal on Wednesday for government spending amid efforts to end squabbling on financial issues between Republicans and Democrats, but the deal still faces crucial votes in the House of Representatives before US president Donald Trump signs it into law.

The White House said the deal includes an extension to the government debt ceiling until March 2019, as Congress now shifts focus to reach a temporary stopgap deal to fund the government until March 23 to avoid a shutdown.

As of 03:56 GMT, Standard and Poor's 500 rose 0.48%, or 12.45 points to 2,593.45, while Dow Jones shed 0.08%, or 19.40 points to 23,841.06.

Tech-heavy NASDAQ rose 0.48%, or 32.52 points to 6,809.68.
