Asian stock indices opened the second session of the week mixed, with Japan tumbling 3% amid global concerns over the spread of the coronavirus, as China, Australia, and New Zealand gave up ground as well, while Hong Kong and South Korea charted higher.

The World Health Organization said the coronavirus is still containable, adding the death toll hasn't surged out of control yet and it's still too early to call it a global epidemic.

China just announced 508 new cases, bringing the total to 77,658 cases, and 71 deaths related to the virus, bringing the total to 2,663.

Japan's TOPEX slumped 2.68%, while Nikkei 225 swooned 2.92% to 22,704.

China's CSI dropped 0.58%, while Shanghai slid 0.87% to 3,004.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.18%, while South Korea's KOSPI gained 0.69% to 2,093.

New Zealand's NZX 50 fell 1%, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.38% to 6,881.
