Asia opens last session of week mixed

Asian stock indices opened the fifth session of the week mixed as investors assess containment efforts for the coronavirus. 

 

The World Health Organization said the decline in coronavirus infection rates outside China might not last, with South Korea announcing the first death with total cases rising to 104. 

 

The People's Bank of China just cut year-long borrowing rates by 10 basis points, and five-year borrowing rates by 5 basis points as expected to prop up the market amid coronavirus concerns. 

 

Japan's TOPEX rose 0.06%, while Nikkei 225 shed 0.28% to 23,413. 

 

China's CSI 300 rose 0.28%, while Shanghai added 0.27% to 3,038. 

 

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.66%, as South Korea's KOSPI declined 1.07% to 2,172. 

 

New Zealand's NZX 50 rose 0.03%, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.24% to 7,145.
