Asian stock indices opened mixed after scaling four-month highs earlier this week on hopes for a US-China trade deal.

US President Donald Trump announced an extension to the trade truce with China, with Chinese media indicating the talks are in their final and most difficult stretches.

Trump asserted the extension would allow for the talks a chance to progress further and hopefully end the trade war.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.44% to 21,544.70, while China's CSI 300 added 0.40% to 3,699.61.

The Shanghai index rose 0.65% to 2,960, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.40% to 28,886.

New Zealand's NZX 50 fell 0.17% to 9,307.48, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.28% to 6,144.40.
