US stocks open slightly higher with trade talks in focus

US stocks edged higher at the start of trading today, as markets focused on developments in the trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

 

Chinese sources revealed today that communication with the US side are still in progress, amid China calls for the Trump administration to cut tariffs in order to pave the way for the signing of the phase one of the trade deal.

 

While it appears that the signing of the deal will likely get delayed, after President Donald Trump said yesterday that a trade agreement with China might have until after the presidential election in 2020.

 

The US Department of Labor revealed today that the number of unemployment claims fell by 10,000 to 203,000 during the last week.

 

As for stocks, Dow Jones fell by 0.1% or 15 points to 27,634 as of 15:02 GMT, while Nasdaq rose nearly 0.1% or 2 points to 8,569, and S&P 500 rose by 0.1% or 2 points to 3,115.
