US stocks open mixed despite Pfizer's vaccine news

The major US stock indices were mixed at early trading on Wednesday, despite Pfizer's announcement of its Covid-19 vaccine.

 

The American company Pfizer and the German firm BioNTech announced on Wednesday that the recent data from the final phase of the clinical trials on their Covid-19 vaccine showed it was 95% effective.

 

The vaccine showed was found to be effective in preventing the virus within 28 days after the first dose, and was consistent across age, especially the elderly.

 

The US building permits index reached 1.55 million in October, lower than estimates of 1.57 million, while the housing starts index rose to 1.53 million units in October, beating forecasts of 1.45 million.

 

As for stocks, Dow Jones rose 0.2% or 70 points to 29,845 as of 14:53 GMT, and Nasdaq fell 0.2% or 30 points to 11,868, while S&P 500 held at 3,608 points.
