US stocks open higher despite disappointing data

The major US stock indices opened higher on Thursday, to shrug off weak data and yesterday's massive losses.

 

The US department of labor showed jobless claims rose 3.3 million to 6.648 million in past week, the all-time record.

 

While the monthly jobs report will be released tomorrow, which will provide key insight on the labor market overall state during March.

 

President Donald Trump warned yesterday that the coronavirus would claim between 100,000 and 240,000 victims in the US in the next two weeks.

 

As for stocks, Dow Jones rose 0.5% or 120 points to 21,062 as of 14:17 GMT, Nasdaq rose 0.6% or 46 points to 7,408, and S&P 500 added 0.8% or 20 points to 2,489.
