Dow Jones slips below 30,000, Nasdaq hits new record

The main US stock indices were mixed in early trading on Wednesday, as Dow Jones fell below the 30,000-point barrier, while Nasdaq jumped to a new record high.

 

Data showed today that the US durable goods orders index rose 1.3% last month, beating forecasts of 1%.

 

The initial unemployment claims reading rose to 778,000 last week, worse than forecasts, while the second reading of the GDP showed growth by 33.1% during the third quarter.

 

The US President-elect Joe Biden welcomed the outgoing President Donald Trump's decision to take the necessary measures to transfer power to the Biden administration.

 

The minutes of the Federal Reserve's last meeting will be revealed later today, which delivers insight on the US monetary policy.

 

As for stocks, Dow Jones fell 0.5% or 173 points to 29,908 as of 15:20 GMT, and S&P 500 fell 0.3% or 10 points to 3,625, while Nasdaq rose 0.1% or 4 points to 12,041.
