Asia opens mixed ahead of anticipated US-China trade talks

Asian stock indices opened the first session of the week mixed, with Chinese, New Zealand, and Hong Kong stocks up, while Australian and Korean stocks gave up ground. 

China's market is back online after closing last week for the new lunar year holiday, while Japan's market is closed for a national holiday. 

Now investors await the third round of US-China trade talks, with US treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin and other officials heading to Beijing later this week to resume negotiations. 

US President Donald Trump recently said he doesn't intend to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping before the early March deadline for their truce, rousing concerns in the markets about returning tariffs if no deal was reached in time. 

China's CSI 300 rose 0.74% to 3,271.27, while the Shanghai index rose 0.50% to 2,631.36. 

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.23% to 28,009.57, while South Korea's KOSPI inched down 0.06% to 2,175.65. 

New Zealand's NZX 50 rose 0.40% to 9,213.62, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.35% to 6,050.40.
