Ethereum slips for second straight day

Ethereum dipped on Tuesday for the second session as most cryptocurrencies lose ground on weak investment demand in markets and continued concerns over security and supervision for trading platforms.

At Bitstamp, ethereum shed $6, or 0.9% to $690 from the opening of $696, with a session-high at $715, and a low at $685.

Ethereum closed down 3.3% on Monday, the second loss in the last three days, after plumbing a four-week low on Friday at $640.

Ethereum tumbled 16.5% last week, the second weekly loss in three, after strict regulations on cryptocurrencies from Japan and the US.

Market value of cryptocurrencies hovered around $365 billion on Tuesday, away from a high at $382 billion, before stepping near a one-month low hit last Friday at $344 billion.

Investment demand has weakened considerably on cryptocurrencies amid constant concerns of security and hack-prevention, while some investors lament potential price manipulation in major exchanges.

The Japanese government has called the Group of 20 to discuss regulating cryptocurrencies by using a unified coding system for the nascent industry, while imposing strict limits to prevent money laundering and terrorism funding through cryptocurrencies.
