The Energy Information Administration reported an increase of 1.1 million barrels in US crude stocks to 481.2 million barrels, while analysts expected a drop of 1.7 million barrels.
Gasoline stocks fell 6.4 million barrels to 229.6 million barrels, while distillate stocks fell 3.3 million barrels to 116.4 million barrels.
