Wall Street opens higher, led by tech and industrial shares

US stock indices opened the first session of the week higher, with the tech and industrial sectors leading the charge on Wall Street amid a strong first-quarter earnings season. 

 

Earlier US data showed the preliminary services PMI rose to 54.4 from 54 in March, beating forecasts of 54.3, while manufacturing PMI rose to 56.5 from 55.6 in March, beating expectations of 55.2. 

 

Existing home sales rose 1.1% in March to an annualized 5.60 million units, compared to a 3% rise in February to 5.54 million, beating expectations of a 0.2% rise to 5.55 million units.

 

As of 02:26 GMT, Standard and Poor's 500 rose 5.81 points to 2,675.84, while Dow Jones added 0.09%, or 22.19 points to 24,485.13. 

 

Tech-heavy NASDAQ climbed 0.25%, or 18.20 points to 7,164.38.
