Gold wavers as dollar dips, while caution reigns ahead of French elections

Gold prices wavered on Thursday after hitting a one-week trough yesterday, as caution reigns the markets ahead of French elections, while the dollar declines today.

The first round of French elections is scheduled for the weekend, and recent polls failed to calm the markets, with caution spreading and impacting the precious metal.

On the other hand, the dollar fell against a basket of major rivals to a three-week low after U.S. unemployment claims rose past expectations.

Gold last traded at $1,281.6 an ounce, compared to the opening of $1,279.4, with an intraday high at $1,282.8, and a low at $1,276.4.

Federal Reserve member Jerome Paol said today that the bank might simplify its pressure tests for banks after banks reached a point where they don't need a qualitative supervision on risk management,

These factors led to gold's wavering today ahead of more developments in the coming period.
